Chapter 12 - LAUREN’S FIRST PLAN
The email described Lauren as an unhappy wife trapped by a controlling husband.
She asked how divorce might affect her access to Emily’s trust.
The attorney replied that the trust belonged to the child and could not be divided as marital property.
Lauren asked whether becoming sole guardian would change that.
The attorney warned that trust distributions would remain supervised.
Lauren did not retain him.
Instead, she contacted Derek.
Phone records showed their affair resumed three days later.
At first, their conversations focused on divorce.
Then Derek began describing methods to create “financial leverage.”
He researched Daniel’s company.
The trust.
Emergency guardianship rules.
He also searched phrases such as:
How courts evaluate child fear.
Can bruises prove custody abuse?
How long until temporary guardian controls child accounts?
Lauren’s attorney argued that Derek manipulated her.
There was evidence of manipulation.
He threatened to expose the affair.
He demanded repayment.
He controlled several accounts in her name.
But Lauren made independent choices too.
She invited him into the house.
She hid his presence from Daniel.
She allowed Emily to be isolated.
She helped invent the swing story.
Most damning was a message she sent Derek after Emily’s first visible bruise.
We should stop. It looks worse than I expected.
Derek replied:
Then call Daniel and end the trip.
Lauren answered:
No. We’re too close.
Daniel read the message in Rachel Morris’s office, the attorney appointed to protect Emily’s trust and assist with the criminal case.
“She knew,” he said.
Rachel nodded.
“She knew Emily was being harmed and chose to continue.”
Lauren requested permission to call Emily from jail.
The court denied it.
She then wrote a letter claiming she had been frightened of Derek and wanted to explain.
Emily’s therapist advised Daniel not to deliver the letter.
“Her healing should not depend on managing her mother’s guilt.”
Daniel locked it inside an evidence file.
He did not destroy it.
One day, Emily might choose to read it.
That decision would belong to her.
