Chapter 6 - THE RULES OF SILENCE

After that day, Emily was given new rules.
She could not close her bedroom door.
She could not call Daniel without Lauren present.
She could not speak to Mrs. Alvarez across the fence.
Her tablet disappeared.
Lauren told Daniel it had been taken away because Emily was refusing homework.
In reality, Emily had used it to photograph Derek’s laptop.
She hid the tablet beneath the loose floorboard under her bed.
Derek searched her room twice but did not find it.
He became impatient.
The hospital project was ending sooner than expected.
Daniel might return before they had enough staged evidence.
Derek began forcing Emily to repeat a sentence.
“Dad gets angry when Mom spends money.”
Emily refused.
He kept her standing in the garage for hours.
Lauren watched from the kitchen.
When Emily cried, Lauren said:
“Do what he says, and this ends faster.”
Derek demanded another sentence.
“Dad grabbed me because I was bad.”
“I won’t say that.”
He struck the garage wall beside her.
The sound terrified her.
Emily backed into a storage rack and bruised her shoulder.
Derek photographed the mark.
Later, he used a thin training strap to frighten her into repeating the words.
The injuries it left did not resemble a playground fall.
That became the evidence Daniel saw beneath the blanket.
Lauren covered Emily’s arms with long sleeves.
She emailed the school claiming Emily had the flu.
When Emily complained that her back hurt, Lauren gave her pain medicine and ordered her to remain in bed.
Derek wanted to take her to a private doctor willing to sign a prepared report.
Lauren hesitated.
“What if someone notices?”
“They won’t if you control the story.”
Emily heard them arguing through the wall.
She understood only pieces.
Trust.
Custody.
Daniel’s temper.
Friday night.
She knew her father was supposed to return Friday.
She also knew they were planning something for him.
So she waited until Lauren fell asleep and retrieved the hidden tablet.
There was no internet connection.
But its recording app still worked.

Emily placed it behind the air vent in Daniel’s office.
👉 Emily could not call for help, so she used the only thing Derek had forgotten to take—a child’s tablet still capable of recording the truth.
