Chapter 11 - THE FATHER THEY INVENTED

Derek’s laptop contained an entire digital case against Daniel.

Edited home videos made his voice sound threatening.

Photographs of broken household objects were labeled as evidence of violent outbursts.

One image showed a lamp Daniel accidentally knocked over while moving furniture three years earlier.

The file description claimed he smashed it during an argument.

Another video showed Daniel raising his voice while speaking on a construction call.

Derek replaced the original audio with Lauren crying.

The most damaging file showed Emily asleep with a bruise on her shoulder.

The metadata had been altered to make it appear the photograph was taken after Daniel returned.

Derek had also created a private journal in Lauren’s name.

It contained months of fabricated entries.

Daniel threatened me again.

Emily is becoming afraid of him.

I need to protect my daughter before it is too late.

A psychologist named Dr. Warren Pike had signed a preliminary evaluation describing Lauren as a frightened spouse and Emily as a child exhibiting trauma connected to her father.

Dr. Pike had never met Daniel.

He interviewed Lauren privately for forty minutes and accepted her account without verification.

He also received a $15,000 consulting payment from one of Derek’s shell companies.

The state licensing board opened an investigation.

Police discovered Derek had reserved a hotel suite for Friday night.

Lauren was supposed to take Emily there immediately after Daniel’s arrest.

From the hotel, she would file the emergency custody petition.

Then she and Derek planned to transfer money, sell several company shares they did not own, and leave the country.

Daniel looked at the files built around his face.

A complete abusive man had been created from ordinary pieces of his life.

He wondered how many people would have believed it.

Detective Brooks answered honestly.

“Enough to begin an investigation.”

Daniel looked toward Emily’s hospital room.

“And while I proved the truth?”

“Lauren would have controlled access to your daughter.”

The realization nearly broke him.

They did not need the lie to survive forever.

Only long enough to take Emily away.

But one file on Derek’s laptop had not been manufactured.

It was an email from Lauren to a family-law attorney.

The date was almost one year earlier.

👉 Lauren’s plan had not begun when Derek returned—she had been preparing to remove Daniel long before the first bruise appeared.
