Chapter 10 - THE VOICES INSIDE THE WALL

Digital technicians recovered eleven audio files from Emily’s tablet.

Most contained ordinary household sounds.

Doors.

Footsteps.

Lauren talking on the phone.

Then Derek’s voice emerged clearly.

“Once Daniel is removed, we petition for emergency control.”

Lauren replied:

“The bank will never give me all of it.”

“We don’t need all of it. We request distributions for therapy, private schooling, security, and relocation.”

“That could take years.”

“Then we borrow against your expected access.”

Another recording captured Derek describing the staged evidence.

“The bruises are already there. We let Daniel lose his temper, then you call the police.”

Lauren sounded nervous.

“What if Emily tells them the truth?”

“She won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know what children do when they think they’re protecting a parent.”

Daniel stopped the audio.

He could not listen any further.

Detective Brooks continued.

The final file had been recorded Thursday night.

Derek said:

“We file the custody petition, freeze Daniel’s company shares, and tell the bank Emily needs relocation for her safety.”

Lauren asked:

“And after that?”

“We leave before the financial audit catches up.”

“With Emily?”

A long silence followed.

Derek answered:

“She complicates everything.”

Lauren did not object.

She asked:

“What do we tell people?”

“That Daniel took her.”

The room became still.

Derek had planned to make Emily disappear after using her injuries to remove Daniel.

Whether he intended to abandon her, hide her, or cause something worse was unclear.

Lauren’s answer was clear enough.

She had continued participating.

Police arrested Derek at the airport before his flight boarded.

He claimed he was traveling for business.

The passports, cash, and encrypted laptop told another story.

Lauren was arrested at the hospital after attempting to delete messages remotely.

Daniel did not watch her being led away.

He remained beside Emily.

When she woke, she asked one question.

“Is Mom mad at me?”

Daniel took her hand.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“But she said families keep secrets.”

May you like

“Safe families don’t need secrets that hurt children.”

👉 The tablet exposed the financial scheme, but Derek’s laptop contained the manufactured evidence they planned to use against Daniel.
