Chapter 7 - MRS. ALVAREZ LOOKS OVER THE FENCE
Mrs. Alvarez first became suspicious when Emily stopped visiting.
Normally, the child appeared at her kitchen door twice a week.
She brought drawings.
Helped water the roses.
Asked questions about Mrs. Alvarez’s childhood in New Mexico.
Then, without explanation, she disappeared.
Mrs. Alvarez saw Derek’s car at the Carter house.
She remembered Daniel saying the man was no longer welcome there.
One afternoon, she heard shouting from the side yard.
Her own doorbell camera faced the gate between the properties.
When she checked the live feed, she saw Derek gripping Emily’s arm.
Lauren stood nearby.
Emily stumbled as he pulled her toward the house.
Mrs. Alvarez called Lauren.
No answer.
She knocked on the front door.
Derek opened it.
“Emily fell,” he said. “Lauren is helping her rest.”
“I heard her crying.”
“Children cry.”
He closed the door.
Mrs. Alvarez saved the footage.
That evening, she emailed Daniel.
The first message did not reach him because Lauren had created a filter forwarding her emails to trash.
Mrs. Alvarez tried again from her church account.
This time, Daniel saw it.
Please come home. Emily is not safe with Derek.
After Daniel booked his flight, Mrs. Alvarez continued watching.
On Thursday night, she saw Derek carry boxes from Daniel’s office to his car.
On Friday afternoon, she saw Lauren place Emily’s swing on the curb.
The swing had been removed before the supposed fall occurred.
Mrs. Alvarez photographed the empty yard.
Then she called the police non-emergency line.
An officer visited but left after Lauren claimed Emily was asleep and had a minor cold.
Emily heard the officer’s voice from the locked bedroom.
She tried to call out.
Derek stood outside the door.
“If you make a sound,” he whispered, “your father will be arrested the moment he gets home.”
Emily remained silent.
Hours later, Daniel entered the house unexpectedly.
Derek had already left to prepare the staged custody documents.
Lauren had not had time to move Emily back to bed.
Daniel found her in the laundry room.
