Chapter 4 - EMILY’S TRUST
Daniel’s mother, Rose Carter, died when Emily was five.
Rose had spent thirty years developing a small chain of rehabilitation clinics.
When she sold the company, she created a protected trust for her only granddaughter.
The money could pay for Emily’s education, medical care, and first home.
Daniel served as trustee alongside First Commonwealth Bank.
Lauren was not given direct control.
Rose had never trusted her judgment with money.
That decision created resentment Lauren never admitted while Rose was alive.
After the funeral, Lauren asked Daniel why she had been excluded.
“The trust belongs to Emily,” he answered.
“I’m her mother.”
“You can request money for her needs like either of us.”
“So the bank gets to decide whether I’m a good mother?”
“It prevents anyone from using the money for something unrelated to her.”
Lauren heard an accusation, even though Daniel had not made one.
Over the following years, she developed expensive habits.
Designer clothes.
Private fitness memberships.
Luxury trips she described as networking events.
Daniel earned well, but Lauren’s spending exceeded their income.
She secretly opened credit cards.
Then she borrowed from Derek.
By the time Daniel fired him, Lauren owed Derek nearly $180,000.
Derek did not want repayment in small amounts.
He wanted access to the Carter family’s assets.
He researched the trust.
Daniel could be removed as trustee if a court found him abusive, absent, or financially unfit.
If Lauren gained sole custody, she could petition to become Emily’s personal guardian and request authority over trust distributions.
The bank would still supervise the funds.
But Derek believed the right judge, the right psychologist, and carefully prepared evidence could weaken those protections.
They needed Daniel to look dangerous.
They needed Emily to appear frightened of him.
Most importantly, they needed visible injuries that could be blamed on Daniel after he returned from his trip.
Lauren did not agree immediately.
Then Derek showed her the overdue bills and threatened to expose their affair.
“If Daniel divorces you first, you leave with nothing,” he said.
Lauren looked toward the photograph of Emily on the mantel.
“What exactly are you asking me to do?”
