Chapter 8 - THE DOCTOR WHO REFUSED THE STORY
At St. Anne’s Children’s Hospital, Dr. Priya Shah examined Emily while Daniel waited nearby.
Lauren attempted to remain in the room.
Emily became visibly tense whenever her mother spoke.
Dr. Shah noticed.
“For the examination, I need only one support person,” she said.
“I’m her mother,” Lauren replied.
“And Daniel is her father. Emily may choose.”
Emily reached for Daniel.
Lauren’s expression tightened.
A nurse escorted her outside.
Dr. Shah spoke softly.
“You are not in trouble.”
Emily watched her father.
“Is Dad going to jail?”
“No,” Daniel said immediately.
“Mom said—”
“You cannot cause me to go to jail by telling the truth.”
Dr. Shah photographed the injuries and ordered imaging.
There were no life-threatening wounds, but Emily had a small healing fracture near one rib, several bruises of different ages, and muscle strain across her back.
The patterns were inconsistent with one fall.
Dr. Shah contacted child-protection services and the police.
Lauren continued repeating the swing story.
Then Mrs. Alvarez sent the doorbell footage directly to Officer Nina Brooks.
The date appeared clearly on the video.
Tuesday.
Lauren’s hospital statement claimed Emily fell Wednesday evening.
Officer Brooks asked where the swing was.
Lauren said it remained in the backyard.
Mrs. Alvarez showed the photograph of the empty yard.
Lauren changed her story.
She claimed Derek removed the swing after the accident.
“Why was Derek at your home?” Brooks asked.
“He came to fix a cabinet.”
“For four consecutive nights?”
Lauren stopped answering.
Derek called her repeatedly.
Brooks instructed her not to answer.
Daniel sat beside Emily as she fell asleep beneath a hospital blanket.
He stared at the bruises on her hand.
“I should have known,” he whispered.
Dr. Shah heard him.
“The person hiding harm is responsible for hiding it. Not the parent who was deliberately deceived.”
Daniel wanted to believe her.
But he remembered every shortened call.
Every excuse he accepted.
Every time he allowed Lauren to tell him Emily was simply misbehaving.
Then Officer Brooks entered carrying a printed report.
“We found Derek’s vehicle.”
“Where?”
“At the airport.”
He had a one-way ticket and two passports.
One belonged to him.
