Chapter 14 - THE BLUE KEY
In the second drawing, Emily had sketched Derek standing near Daniel’s desk.
A blue key hung from his hand.
Daniel recognized it.
His mother had given him a blue safe-deposit key when she created Emily’s trust.
It opened a bank box containing the original trust documents and a handwritten letter for Emily.
Daniel kept the key inside his home safe.
After the search, it was missing.
Police searched Derek’s possessions again.
No blue key.
Emily explained that she saw Lauren place it inside the lining of her red purse.
The purse remained in police evidence.
Investigators opened the stitched inner pocket.
The key was there.
The bank box had been accessed twice during Daniel’s trip.
Security footage showed Lauren entering with forged authorization bearing Daniel’s signature.
A bank employee named Kevin Marsh approved her access despite obvious inconsistencies.
He received $20,000 from Derek the following day.
Inside the box, Lauren and Derek photographed the trust agreement.
They also took Rose Carter’s letter to Emily.
But they missed the duplicate stored with Rachel’s firm.
The letter was meant to be opened when Emily turned eighteen.
Because the original had become evidence, Daniel requested court permission to preserve it unopened.
Emily’s therapist supported the decision.
“She has already had too many adult secrets forced upon her.”
Financial investigators followed the bank bribe.
Derek had created loans using expected trust distributions as false collateral.
He owed private lenders nearly $600,000.
The scheme was more desperate than police first believed.
If Lauren did not gain control quickly, Derek’s lenders would expose him.
That explained the increasing pressure.
It also explained his plan to leave the country without Emily.
She was never a child he intended to protect.
She was a financial access point.
Lauren understood that by Thursday night.
The tablet recorded her asking whether Emily would travel with them.
Derek’s answer made his intentions obvious.
Yet she continued.
The evidence supported charges far beyond child endangerment.
Conspiracy.
Financial fraud.
Witness intimidation.
Attempted custodial interference.
