Chapter 15 - THE TWO PEOPLE WHO BLAMED EACH OTHER

Lauren and Derek turned against each other before jury selection began.
Lauren claimed Derek controlled her through threats and debt.
Derek claimed Lauren invented the custody plan because she wanted Daniel’s house and company.
Both versions contained pieces of truth.
Neither erased what they did to Emily.
Derek’s attorney portrayed him as a financial criminal who never intended physical harm.
Prosecutors played the tablet recording.
“I know what children do when they think they’re protecting a parent.”
The jury heard calculation in his voice.
Lauren’s attorney argued she froze because she was terrified of Derek.
Prosecutors introduced her message:
No. We’re too close.
The financial evidence showed she had applied for an apartment in Costa Rica under a new name.
She transferred jewelry and cash into a travel account.
She signed the false custody affidavit.
She also photographed Emily’s injuries for use against Daniel.
Dr. Shah testified that the bruising could not have resulted from one swing accident.
Mrs. Alvarez authenticated the doorbell footage.
The school attendance officer confirmed Lauren falsely reported Emily ill.
The bank employee admitted accepting Derek’s payment and allowing Lauren into the safe-deposit box.
Dr. Pike surrendered his license and testified that Lauren gave him a scripted account.
Daniel was not required to prove he was a perfect father.
He had to tell the truth.
He admitted traveling too often.
He admitted accepting Lauren’s explanations when he should have asked harder questions.
The defense attempted to turn those admissions into negligence.
Daniel answered:
“I trusted my daughter’s mother. That was my mistake. What happened to Emily was their choice.”
Emily did not testify in open court.
Her forensic interview was played privately to the jury with identifying details protected.
Daniel waited outside during that portion.
He could not bear to hear her describe the locked room again.
Afterward, Detective Brooks found him in the hallway.
“The jury heard her,” she said.
“Did she look scared?”
“She looked brave.”
Daniel shook his head.

“She shouldn’t have needed to be.”
👉 Emily’s recorded truth survived every attack, and the final evidence came from the camera Derek had installed to frame Daniel.
