Chapter 16 - THE CAMERA TURNED AROUND
The hidden hallway camera automatically uploaded short clips whenever it detected motion.
Derek believed he had deleted everything recorded before Daniel’s return.
A cloud backup preserved one final segment.
It was recorded Thursday at 11:48 p.m.
Lauren and Derek stood beneath the camera discussing Friday night.
Derek demonstrated where Lauren should position Emily.
“When Daniel enters, you start shouting.”
“What if he takes her and leaves?”
“You block the door.”
“And if he calls the police?”
“You cry. Show them the bruises. Tell them he did it after he got home.”
Lauren looked toward Emily’s locked bedroom.
“She’s getting worse.”
“Then the evidence looks stronger.”
Lauren began to say something.
Derek interrupted.
“Tomorrow Daniel loses his daughter. By Monday, you control the petition.”
The camera captured Lauren nodding.
Then she looked directly toward the smoke detector.
For one second, it appeared she understood the device was recording.
She reached up.
The clip ended.
Derek’s own equipment proved the conspiracy.
The jury returned verdicts after two days.
Derek was convicted of child abuse, unlawful restraint, conspiracy, financial fraud, witness intimidation, attempted evidence fabrication, and multiple related offenses.
Lauren was convicted of child endangerment, conspiracy, custodial interference, financial fraud, false reporting, and allowing abuse.
The court found that her failure to protect Emily was not passive.
She actively supported the plan.
After the verdict, Lauren asked to see Daniel.
He agreed only with attorneys present.
She cried before she sat down.
“I never thought it would go this far.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You locked our daughter in a room.”
“Derek frightened me.”
“Emily was eight. She was frightened too.”
Lauren lowered her head.
“I love her.”
“Love without protection did not keep her safe.”
She asked Daniel to tell Emily she was sorry.
He refused.
