Chapter 2 - THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME EARLY

Daniel was supposed to remain in Denver for another four days.
He managed large commercial construction projects and had spent nearly three weeks supervising a hospital renovation.
At first, he called Emily every night.
She showed him drawings.
Asked when he was coming home.
Made him promise they would finish building her treehouse together.
Then her calls became shorter.
Lauren began answering for her.
“Emily is tired.”
“She’s doing homework.”
“She lost tablet privileges.”
On the final three nights, Daniel was not allowed to speak with his daughter at all.
Lauren claimed Emily had fallen from the backyard swing and felt embarrassed because Daniel had repeatedly warned her not to stand on it.
Daniel asked to see the injury during a video call.
Lauren became offended.
“You think I can’t care for my own child?”
He apologized.
But the uneasiness remained.
Then Mrs. Alvarez sent him a message.
She and her late husband had lived next door for twenty-seven years. She had watched Emily grow from a baby who slept against Daniel’s shoulder into a curious child who left painted rocks on her porch.
Her message contained only nine words:
Please come home. Emily is not safe with Derek.
Daniel took the first flight he could find.
He told no one he was returning.
When he arrived after dark, the house was quiet.
Lauren’s car was in the driveway.
The front door was unlocked.
He found Emily lying alone on the laundry-room floor beneath a thin towel.
Her bedroom had been locked from the outside.
Lauren appeared moments later and insisted Emily had hidden there after throwing a tantrum.
Daniel did not argue.
He wrapped Emily in a blanket and carried her outside.
That was when Mrs. Alvarez emerged with the video.
Daniel drove directly to St. Anne’s Children’s Hospital.
Lauren followed in her car.
During the drive, Emily remained silent until Daniel stopped at a red light.
Then she whispered:
“Mom said you would go to jail if I told.”
Daniel’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“Told me what?”
Emily began shaking.

“She said Derek had a plan.”
👉 Lauren had frightened Emily into silence by threatening her father—but neither of them knew what Derek’s “plan” truly involved.
