Chapter 1 - THAT WASN’T A FALL

“Dad… my back hurts.”
Daniel Carter tightened both arms around his eight-year-old daughter.
Emily lay wrapped in a white blanket against his chest, her eyes barely open. One small hand clutched the front of his shirt as though letting go would send her back inside the house.
Cold porch light spilled across the wet stone.
Lauren stood in the doorway wearing a red dress, her face pale but controlled.
“She fell off the swing,” she said. “I was going to take her to the doctor in the morning.”
Daniel pulled the blanket aside.
Dark bruises marked Emily’s arm.
More crossed her shoulder in narrow, parallel lines.
His face changed.
“That’s not a fall.”
Lauren stepped down from the porch.
“You just got home. You’re exhausted. Let me take her.”
Emily immediately curled closer to Daniel.
He felt the fear travel through her body.
Near the front gate, their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez, stood beneath an umbrella with a flashlight in one hand and her phone in the other.
“I think you need to see this,” she said.
The phone displayed footage from her doorbell camera.
Tuesday afternoon.
The Carter family’s side yard.
Derek Walsh appeared in the frame, gripping Emily by the upper arm as he dragged her toward the house. Lauren followed them.
She did not stop him.
She looked toward the street to make sure no one was watching.
Daniel raised his eyes to his wife.
“You told her to stay quiet?”
Lauren’s phone began vibrating.
DEREK flashed across the screen.
In the distance, police lights reflected against the wet road.
Daniel carried Emily toward his car.
Lauren moved to block him.
“She is my daughter too.”
“Then why is she afraid of you?”
Lauren had no answer.
Mrs. Alvarez handed Daniel the phone.
“The camera saved more than that,” she whispered.
Daniel looked down at Emily.
His daughter’s eyes remained closed, but her lips moved.
