Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA IN THE HALLWAY
Derek installed the camera inside a smoke detector facing Emily’s bedroom.
Lauren told Emily it was part of a new home-security system.
Its real purpose was to record Daniel after his return.
Derek planned to provoke an argument.
Lauren would accuse Daniel of frightening Emily.
A short clip would show Daniel raising his voice near a visibly injured child.
The earlier footage of Derek inside the house would be deleted.
Then Lauren would take Emily to the hospital and claim the bruises appeared after Daniel arrived.
Derek had already drafted an anonymous child-protection report.
It described Daniel as controlling, angry, and frequently absent.
He also created messages that appeared to show Lauren asking friends for help.
The dates were backdated.
The friends did not exist.
Emily discovered part of the plan by accident.
She entered Daniel’s office looking for paper for a school project.
Derek’s laptop was open.
On the screen was a photograph of her bruised arm beside a typed caption:
INJURY OBSERVED AFTER FATHER’S RETURN.
Emily had not been injured yet.
She stared at the sentence.
Then she saw a folder labeled:
DANIEL—CUSTODY REMOVAL.
Derek entered before she could close the laptop.
“What are you doing?”
“Why is my picture there?”
He shut the screen.
“You shouldn’t touch adult things.”
Emily ran toward the hallway.
Derek grabbed her arm.
She screamed for Lauren.
Her mother appeared at the doorway.
For one hopeful second, Emily believed she would be rescued.
Instead, Lauren closed the office door.
“Tell him what you saw,” Derek ordered.
Emily looked at her mother.
Lauren knelt before her.
“You opened private files and misunderstood them.”
“It said Dad hurt me.”
“No, sweetheart.”
“It did.”
Lauren’s voice became cold.
“If you tell Daniel, he’ll think you’re lying. Then he’ll leave us both.”
Derek tightened his grip.
Emily promised she would say nothing.
He released her.
