Chapter 3 - THE CHECK FOR ROBINSON HOUSE
The fifty-thousand-dollar check did not belong to Martha personally.
Not in the way Daniel assumed.
Thirty-seven years earlier, Martha had spent three months sleeping in a women’s shelter after fleeing an abusive marriage.
She arrived with a bruised cheek, twenty-eight dollars and a six-year-old son named Alexander.
The shelter gave them two narrow beds.
Warm meals.
A locked door.
A social worker who helped Martha find employment.
The building was called Robinson House, though it had no connection to Martha then.
It was named after a nineteenth-century teacher who founded one of the city’s first relief kitchens.
Years later, when Martha finally became financially secure, she quietly paid the shelter’s property taxes.
She funded repairs.
She purchased the neighboring building when developers threatened to force the shelter out.
But she refused to put her name on donor walls.
The fifty thousand dollars was intended for a new childcare room.
Martha chose to deliver the check herself because she wanted to speak with the branch’s charitable-services officer.
Her son’s banking group managed the shelter fund.
He had told her she could visit any branch.
He believed she would be treated with respect.
Neither of them knew Daniel Thompson had built his career on judging customers by appearance.
Daniel believed wealthy clients deserved patience.
Ordinary clients deserved efficiency.
People who looked poor deserved suspicion.
Jessica had learned by watching him.
She copied his expressions.
His contempt.
His habit of delaying service for customers who wore work uniforms, carried foreign identification or spoke uncertain English.
Employees complained privately.
No one filed a formal report.
Daniel had produced strong sales numbers.
He entertained high-value clients.
Senior regional managers praised him.
Marcus, the security officer, had witnessed several humiliations.
