Chapter 11 - THE ACCOUNT DANIEL NEVER CHECKED
Daniel insisted Martha’s appearance justified additional caution.
Alexander ordered Elaine to display the internal account verification.
Martha’s customer profile carried the highest private-security classification in the bank.
Her personal holdings were substantial but not publicly discussed.
More important, she controlled charitable trusts, property funds and early voting shares transferred before the bank went public.
Daniel had access to a limited customer-identification tool.
Had he entered her license number, the screen would have instructed him to contact executive services.
He never entered it.
Had Jessica scanned the cashier’s check, the issuing institution would have confirmed it instantly.
She never scanned it.
Had Daniel called the charitable-services officer, the deposit would have been completed privately.
He never called.
Every safeguard existed.
Prejudice bypassed all of them.
Daniel looked at the account summary and whispered:
“I didn’t know.”
Martha stood several feet away.
“You did not want to know.”
“I was protecting the bank.”
“From whom?”
He could not answer.
“From an older woman with a worn coat?”
Daniel’s shoulders lowered.
“I made an error in judgment.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“No. An error in judgment is approving the wrong fee waiver. You assaulted a customer because you believed she had no power.”
Daniel looked at Martha.
“I’m sorry.”
She held his gaze.

“Would you be sorry if the restricted phone had not rung?”
The question silenced him.
