Chapter 25 - DANIEL’S LETTER
A year into his sentence, Daniel wrote Martha.
The letter was twelve pages.
He described losing his job.
His apartment.
His reputation.
His engagement.
For eight pages, he focused on himself.
Then the tone changed.
He wrote about watching the footage during legal preparation.
He saw Jessica laugh.
Marcus freeze.
Customers turn away.
He saw Martha reach for the check.
For the first time, he understood the scene did not begin with the kick.
It began when he decided her dignity depended on her appearance.
He apologized without asking for leniency.
Martha read the letter once.
She did not respond.
Alexander asked why.
“Because his understanding does not create an obligation for me.”
“Do you believe him?”
“I believe he is beginning to see.”
