Chapter 28 - THE MAN WHO ASKED WHO SHE WAS

Years later, Daniel completed his sentence and worked in a warehouse.

He no longer wore tailored suits.

He no longer controlled access cards.

A coworker recognized him and asked about the video.

Daniel did not claim misunderstanding.

He said:

“I thought power told me who deserved respect.”

The coworker asked whether Martha had forgiven him.

Daniel answered:

“She did not owe me that.”

That response reached Martha through a reporter.

She read it quietly.

Alexander asked whether she wanted to contact him.

“No.”

“Do you think he changed?”

“Perhaps.”

“Doesn’t that matter?”

“It matters to the next person he meets.”

Martha returned to her gardening.
