Chapter 15 - THE CERTIFIED CHECK
The fifty-thousand-dollar check remained inside an evidence sleeve for two days.
Martha refused to replace it.
“I want that one deposited.”
Alexander understood.
The check carried a faint shoe mark from the marble floor.
One corner was bent.
It had become evidence of how easily purpose could be ignored when appearance controlled judgment.
The Robinson House childcare project could not wait.
A senior charitable-services officer processed the deposit in Martha’s hospital room.
No ceremony.
No cameras.
Martha signed the form.
Then she added another fifty thousand from her personal account.
Alexander looked at her.
“You don’t have to double it.”
“I know.”
“Why are you?”
“Because somewhere in that shelter is a woman wearing a coat people will judge.”
Robinson House used the money to open a twenty-four-hour childcare room for mothers attending job training, court hearings or medical appointments.
The wall remained free of donor names.
Martha asked for only one sentence near the entrance:
No one must prove their worth before receiving safety.
It was not placed there as revenge against Daniel.
