Chapter 16 - JESSICA’S CHOICE
Jessica was suspended.
Her parents urged her to hire an attorney and deny everything.
Her friends said Daniel had manipulated her.
Both statements contained some truth.
Neither erased her choices.
Jessica requested a meeting with Martha.
Martha almost refused.
Then she agreed.
Jessica arrived without makeup, carrying a folder.
“I wrote down every customer I remember treating unfairly.”
Martha did not touch the folder.
“Why?”
“Because investigators asked.”
“That is not enough.”
Jessica looked ashamed.
“Because I heard myself on the recording.”
She described how easy contempt had become.
At first, she laughed to impress Daniel.
Then she began believing customers deserved the treatment.
She stopped seeing people.
She saw balances.
Clothes.
Accents.
Estimated value.
“I don’t expect my job back.”
“You should not.”
Jessica nodded.
“I want to apologize.”
“Apologize to the customers whose names are in that folder.”
“What if they don’t accept?”
“Then you live with an unanswered apology.”
Jessica later testified against Daniel.
She lost her banking license for a period and completed a restorative-service program.
Years later, she would work for a nonprofit teaching financial literacy.
Martha never called her redeemed.
