Chapter 7 - ETHAN STARTS LISTENING
Ethan returned home two weeks before graduation.
Marcus greeted him with expensive gifts.
A new watch.
A company car.
An office prepared for him at Whitmore Hospitality.
“I want you beside me,” Marcus said.
“What would I do?”
“Learn to run what will eventually be yours.”
Rebecca watched from the kitchen.
Marcus had never previously encouraged Ethan to join the company.
Ethan studied environmental engineering and planned to work in sustainable construction.
Now Marcus suddenly spoke as though inheritance required obedience.
Dana arrived for dinner that evening.
She hugged Ethan before he could decide whether he wanted to be touched.
“I waited twenty years for this,” she whispered.
Ethan remained stiff.
Dana brought photographs from his infancy.
Most had been taken before he was six months old.
She cried while telling him she had been forced away.
Marcus supported every detail.
“Rebecca was afraid you would choose Dana,” he said.
Rebecca placed her fork down.
“That is not true.”
Marcus ignored her.
Dana described unanswered letters.
Rebecca asked to see them.
Dana claimed they had been destroyed.
The conversation became increasingly cruel.
Marcus referred to Rebecca as “the woman who helped raise you.”
Dana called her “your father’s live-in babysitter.”
Ethan noticed that Rebecca did not defend herself aggressively.
She simply became quieter.
After dinner, he found her washing dishes alone.
“Why aren’t you fighting back?”
Rebecca looked toward the doorway.
“Because I don’t want you forced to choose a mother during your graduation week.”
“What if I want the truth?”
“Then you deserve all of it. Not the version shouted loudest at dinner.”
Rebecca gave him copies of the guardianship records.
Ethan read Dana’s signed refusal of custody.
He read the social worker’s report describing Marcus’s disappearance.
He saw Rebecca’s name on medical consent forms, school enrollment records, and emergency petitions.
Then he found a document Marcus had never mentioned.
Rebecca had applied to adopt Ethan when he was seven.
