Chapter 10 - THE MONEY DANA RECEIVED

Rebecca reviewed the company’s accounts with a forensic auditor.

Marcus had transferred $380,000 over eleven months to consulting firms connected to Dana.

The invoices described market research and property services.

No work had been performed.

Part of the money paid Dana’s debts.

Another part funded the condo Marcus promised her.

The transfers required authorization from two officers.

Marcus had used Rebecca’s electronic signature as the second approval.

Rebecca had not signed them.

The fraud went beyond an affair and a divorce.

Marcus had stolen company money and forged the majority owner’s approval.

He also used corporate funds to pay the attorney drafting the plan to remove her shares.

Samuel notified the company’s outside directors.

They agreed to attend the graduation party without alerting Marcus.

A financial-crimes investigator prepared to receive the evidence if Marcus attempted another transfer.

Rebecca wanted to file the divorce immediately.

Ethan asked her to wait one day.

“I need him to put the papers in front of us.”

“He has already hurt you enough.”

“This is not about proving anything to me,” Ethan said. “The board needs to see who he is before he claims you fabricated everything.”

Rebecca looked at the young man she had once carried into an emergency room with pneumonia.

He was no longer the frightened child waiting for adults to return.

He had become someone capable of protecting the truth.

Still, she worried.

“Dana may be your biological mother, Ethan. Whatever she has done, you may have feelings you don’t understand yet.”

“I do.”

He swallowed.

“I feel sad for the version of her I used to imagine.”

Rebecca reached for his hand.

“I will never ask you to hate her.”

“That’s why you’re my mother.”

Before the party, Samuel prepared four sets of documents.

The shareholder ledger proving Rebecca’s control.

The fraudulent transfers.

The old custody records.

The divorce draft.

He also prepared one document Ethan requested privately.

Rebecca did not know about it.

Ethan placed it in a sealed envelope and instructed Samuel to enter only after the recording played.

👉 The secret document was not designed to punish Marcus—it would finally give Rebecca the legal place in Ethan’s life that Marcus denied her years earlier.
