Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO ARRIVED AT MIDNIGHT
Twenty years earlier, Rebecca Lane was not looking for a family.
She was twenty-eight, recently divorced, and working as an elementary school counselor while completing a graduate degree.
Marcus lived across the hall from her in a small apartment building outside Philadelphia.
He was twenty-nine and raising an eighteen-month-old boy alone.
At least, that was what he told everyone.
Dana had disappeared six months earlier.
She left behind baby clothes, unpaid bills, and a short note telling Marcus she was not ready to be a mother.
Marcus worked late shifts selling restaurant equipment.
His babysitter quit without warning one winter evening.
Rebecca heard Ethan crying through the apartment wall for nearly forty minutes before she knocked.
Marcus answered with his coat on and panic in his eyes.
“I have to meet a client,” he said. “If I miss this sale, I can’t pay rent.”
Rebecca looked past him.
Ethan stood inside his crib, his small face wet with tears.
“I can watch him tonight.”
Marcus hesitated.
“I can’t pay much.”
“I didn’t ask for money.”
That first night became several nights.
Rebecca learned that Ethan would only sleep if someone hummed beside his crib.
She learned he hated peas, loved yellow blankets, and reached for books before toys.
When Ethan developed pneumonia, Rebecca stayed beside him at the hospital while Marcus dealt with an angry client.
Months later, Marcus offered to pay her as a part-time nanny.
Rebecca refused.
“I’m helping because he needs someone familiar.”
Ethan began calling her “Becca.”
Then “Mama Becca.”
Marcus cried the first time he heard it.
Two years later, he proposed.
“You saved both of us,” he said.
Rebecca believed she was joining a man who understood what she had given.
