Chapter 18 - THE ADOPTION HE COULD NOT STOP
The adoption hearing took place on a rainy Thursday morning.
There were no chandeliers.
No company executives.
No photographers.
Only Rebecca, Ethan, Samuel, and a judge.
Ethan wore the same white shirt from his graduation party.
Rebecca wore a simple blue dress.
The judge reviewed the petition.
“Mr. Whitmore, you understand that adult adoption is permanent?”
“Yes.”
“You understand that Rebecca will become your legal parent with the same status as a biological parent?”
Ethan looked at her.
“That is why I’m here.”
The judge asked Rebecca whether she consented.
She tried to answer.
Her voice failed.
Ethan reached for her hand.
“Yes,” she finally whispered.
The judge smiled.
“Then the petition is granted.”
Rebecca began crying before the gavel touched the bench.
Ethan hugged her.
For twenty years, Marcus had been able to threaten the relationship because he controlled the legal definition.
That power ended in a courtroom he could not enter.
Ethan requested a new birth certificate listing Rebecca as his mother.
He did not remove Dana’s history from his life.
He added the woman who had lived the role.
After the hearing, Samuel gave them a small box.
Inside was a silver key.
“What is this?” Rebecca asked.
Ethan smiled.
“The office next to mine.”
He had decided to join Whitmore Hospitality after all—but not as Marcus’s replacement.
He would lead the company’s sustainability division while completing additional training.
Rebecca became active chairwoman for the first time.
She refused to become a silent owner again.
The company renamed its employee education program after her father, whose inheritance made everything possible.
At the first board meeting, Rebecca’s name appeared at the top of the agenda.
Not as Marcus’s wife.
Not as Ethan’s former caregiver.
As Rebecca Lane Whitmore, founder and majority chairwoman.
Still, one room in the company headquarters remained filled with photographs chosen by Marcus.
