Chapter 13 - THE PAPER ETHAN CHOSE
Samuel opened the notarized envelope.
Inside was an adult adoption petition.
Because Ethan was twenty-two, he did not need Marcus’s consent.
He had signed the petition several weeks earlier.
The second page was Ethan’s formal statement.
Rebecca Lane Whitmore has acted as my mother in every meaningful part of my life. She raised me, protected me, educated me, and remained when others left. I request that the law recognize the relationship we have already lived for twenty years.
Rebecca stared at him.
“You did this?”
Ethan nodded.
“I wanted to tell you after graduation.”
Her hand rose to her mouth.
“But when I found Dad’s plan, I asked Samuel to bring it tonight.”
Marcus finally stood, frosting falling from his sleeve.
“You cannot erase biology.”
Ethan faced him.
“I am not erasing anyone.”
He looked toward Dana.
“She gave birth to me.”
Then he turned to Rebecca.
“She became my mother.”
Dana began crying.
“I made mistakes.”
“You signed away custody when I was four.”
“I was scared.”
“You had nineteen years to call.”
“Rebecca kept you from me.”
Ethan lifted the records.
“She kept every address the court had for you. She sent school photographs for five years. They were returned unopened.”
Dana’s crying stopped.
Rebecca had never told Ethan about the photographs.
She had not wanted him to grow up measuring his worth against returned envelopes.
Ethan turned toward Marcus.
“You stopped the adoption because you wanted to use me against her.”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“I was protecting my rights as your father.”
“You were protecting your control.”
Samuel handed Rebecca the petition.
Her tears fell onto Ethan’s signature.
She looked at him.
“You never had to prove this.”
“I know.”
Ethan embraced her.
Across the room, Marcus realized the public humiliation had produced the opposite result.
He had tried to reduce Rebecca to a temporary caregiver.
Instead, his son had asked the law to recognize her forever.
But Samuel still held another folder.
