Chapter 17 - REBECCA SPEAKS
At Marcus’s sentencing hearing, Rebecca stood behind a wooden podium.
Marcus sat beside his attorney.
He looked older.
The confidence that once filled company dinners had been replaced by resentment.
Rebecca described the first night she watched Ethan.
The pneumonia.
The guardianship hearing.
The failed adoption.
The inheritance she invested.
The property she sold to save the company.
Then she described the graduation party.
“You called me a nanny because you believed motherhood belonged to whoever could use the word as a weapon.”
Marcus looked away.
“You knew I would endure almost anything to remain in Ethan’s life. For years, you treated that love as leverage.”
Rebecca did not claim every year of marriage was false.
That would have been easier.
She admitted there had been laughter, vacations, and ordinary mornings she once treasured.
“The existence of good memories does not cancel deliberate betrayal,” she said.
Ethan delivered his own statement.
“My father taught me that biology can create responsibility. Rebecca taught me that love fulfills it.”
Marcus received prison time for fraud, conspiracy, forgery, and identity theft.
His sentence was reduced because company funds had been recovered and no employees lost their pensions.
Dana received a shorter sentence after cooperating, surrendering the condo, and returning hidden funds.
Both were ordered to pay restitution.
Marcus lost all executive authority and was barred from serving as an officer of a public-facing company during supervision.
The divorce judgment awarded Rebecca her controlling shares and a fair portion of marital property.
Marcus received no interest in Ethan’s trust.
He also lost the right to use the Whitmore Hospitality name in future businesses.
Outside court, a reporter asked Rebecca whether she felt she had taken everything from her former husband.
She answered:
“I took back what was already mine.”
Two weeks later, a judge scheduled the adult adoption hearing.
Rebecca could face Marcus as an ex-wife.
