Chapter 6 - THE DIVORCE THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN
Rebecca did not confront Marcus immediately.
She photographed the hotel receipt and called Samuel Rhodes.
Samuel had become a family friend as well as the company’s longtime attorney.
He listened while Rebecca described Dana’s return, Marcus’s secrecy, and the questions about custody.
Then he asked something unexpected.
“Has Marcus asked you to sign any company paperwork recently?”
Two weeks earlier, Marcus had placed a routine-looking packet beside Rebecca’s breakfast.
He said the documents updated voting procedures before Ethan’s trust transfer.
Rebecca had not signed them.
Samuel examined the packet.
The language would have converted Rebecca’s controlling shares into nonvoting stock.
Marcus would receive permanent management authority.
Another document transferred Ethan’s trust proxy to Marcus for ten years.
“Can he do this without us?” Rebecca asked.
“No. He needs both signatures.”
“Then why bring Dana back?”
Samuel removed his glasses.
“To convince Ethan that you manipulated him. If Ethan gives Marcus the trust proxy and you sign under pressure, Marcus controls the company.”
Samuel searched public court filings.
A divorce petition had already been drafted by Marcus’s private attorney.
It described Rebecca as a former caregiver who contributed no significant capital to the marriage.
It claimed Whitmore Hospitality was Marcus’s separate business.
It requested the house, company control, and protection from Rebecca’s “financial interference.”
Attached was a proposed settlement giving Rebecca a modest monthly payment for three years.
After twenty years of marriage, she would leave with less than one year of Marcus’s salary.
“The petition hasn’t been filed,” Samuel said.
“He intends to present it after Ethan’s graduation.”
“Why then?”
“Because the trust transfers that morning.”
Rebecca felt sick.
Marcus planned to take Ethan’s loyalty, the company shares, and their home in one night.
The graduation party was not a family celebration.
It was a public stage.
Marcus expected Rebecca to be too devastated to fight while Dana appeared as the returning mother.
Then Samuel discovered a note from Marcus’s attorney.
