Chapter 3 - THE YEAR MARCUS DISAPPEARED
When Ethan was four, Marcus’s sales company collapsed.
He had guaranteed several business loans personally.
Creditors called daily.
The landlord threatened eviction.
Marcus became ashamed and unpredictable.
One morning, he left a note saying he needed three days to “fix everything.”
He disappeared for nearly three weeks.
Rebecca was not yet married to him.
She had no legal relationship to Ethan.
When the preschool learned Marcus could not be reached, a social worker came to the apartment.
Unless a relative or legal guardian stepped forward, Ethan could be placed in temporary foster care.
Dana could not be found.
Marcus’s parents refused responsibility.
Rebecca hired Samuel Rhodes using nearly all her savings.
She petitioned for emergency guardianship.
The judge asked why an unrelated woman should be trusted with the child.
Rebecca answered honestly.
“Because everyone related to him has already left.”
She received temporary guardianship that afternoon.
Rebecca paid the rent.
She enrolled Ethan in health insurance through her job.
She sat beside his bed every night while he asked whether his father was coming back.
When Marcus finally returned, he looked exhausted and frightened.
He admitted he had been staying in motels while negotiating with creditors.
Rebecca was furious.
“You left your child without knowing whether I could legally keep him.”
“I knew you wouldn’t abandon him.”
“That does not make what you did acceptable.”
Marcus promised he would change.
He entered counseling.
He found stable work.
A year later, he and Rebecca married in a small courthouse ceremony with Ethan holding both their hands.
Marcus asked Rebecca to end the guardianship because they were now a family.
Samuel advised her to keep the court records.
“Love does not replace legal protection,” he warned.
Rebecca kept them in a locked box.
Years later, those same papers would prove that the woman Marcus called a nanny had been the only adult who prevented his son from being taken away.
But the records contained another detail.
During the guardianship hearing, Dana had been formally contacted.
