Chapter 15 - THE PRICE OF A RETURNING MOTHER

Investigators recovered eighteen months of messages between Marcus and Dana.
Their affair began before Dana contacted Ethan.
Marcus found her through a private investigator.
He did not search because he wanted to reunite mother and son.
He searched because Rebecca had refused to surrender her voting shares.
Marcus believed Dana’s return could destabilize Ethan and isolate Rebecca.
In one message, he wrote:
He has always wondered about her. We use that before the trust transfers.
Dana replied:
What do I receive if he accepts me?
Marcus promised the condo, cash, and a corporate title.
Dana asked whether Rebecca would fight.
Marcus answered:
Not after I remind her she has no legal right to Ethan.
The messages also showed Dana knew about the false consulting invoices.
She provided bank accounts and signed reports for work she never performed.
Marcus forged Rebecca’s authorization.
Together, they stole $380,000.
Both were charged with conspiracy, corporate fraud, and identity theft.
Marcus faced additional charges for falsifying shareholder records.
Dana’s attorney argued she had been emotionally manipulated.
The messages weakened that claim.
She repeatedly demanded more money before agreeing to attend the graduation party.
The divorce case proceeded separately.
Marcus requested half of Rebecca’s shares, arguing the company grew during marriage.
Samuel presented the original shareholder agreement and inheritance records.
Rebecca’s controlling interest remained her separate property.
Marcus was entitled to a portion of marital assets.
He was not entitled to the company he tried to steal.
The house was more complicated.
Both names appeared on the deed.
Then auditors showed Marcus had taken loans against it without Rebecca’s informed consent.
The court awarded Rebecca temporary possession while the fraud case continued.
Marcus moved into a rental apartment.
Dana lost the condo purchased with stolen company money.
Without Marcus’s promises, she attempted to contact Ethan again.
She sent a long letter claiming she had always loved him.
Ethan read it once.
He did not respond immediately.
He asked Rebecca what she thought.
“I think you should make the choice that protects your peace,” she said.
“Even if I speak to her?”
Rebecca’s eyes softened.

“Loving me never requires hating her.”
👉 Rebecca refused to compete with Dana even after the betrayal, but Dana’s first supervised meeting with Ethan revealed whether she wanted a son or another chance at the Whitmore fortune.
