Chapter 5 - DANA RETURNS

Dana called Marcus six months before Ethan’s graduation.

She had not spoken to Ethan in nineteen years.

There were no birthday cards.

No school photographs requested.

No calls after his surgeries or graduations.

She had occasionally searched for him online, but she never contacted him.

Dana told Marcus she had changed.

She had lived in California, remarried twice, and recently lost her position at a luxury real estate firm.

“I’m ready to know my son,” she said.

Marcus did not tell Rebecca about the call.

Instead, he met Dana at a hotel bar.

The first meeting lasted three hours.

The second lasted overnight.

Marcus began traveling more often.

He changed the password to his private phone.

Rebecca noticed unfamiliar perfume on his jacket.

When she asked, he accused her of being insecure.

“You’ve always been threatened by Dana.”

“I haven’t heard her name in nineteen years.”

“She is Ethan’s biological mother.”

“And I am the woman who raised him.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You are his stepmother.”

Rebecca stared at him.

It was the first time he used the word as a limitation.

Dana contacted Ethan directly two weeks later.

Her message was emotional.

She said she had been young, frightened, and manipulated into leaving.

She claimed Marcus and Rebecca had prevented her from returning.

Ethan read the message alone in his college apartment.

He did not respond immediately.

He called Rebecca.

“Did you stop Dana from seeing me?”

Rebecca’s heart broke at the question.

“No.”

“Did Dad?”

“I don’t know everything Marcus told her.”

“Why didn’t you ever talk about it?”

“Because I never wanted your childhood built around someone else’s absence.”

Ethan asked whether records existed.

Rebecca told him about the locked box.

That evening, Marcus discovered they had spoken.

He became furious.

“You had no right to discuss private custody matters with him.”

“He asked me directly.”

“You should have told him Dana loved him.”

Rebecca’s voice lowered.

“Did she tell you to say that?”

Marcus walked away.

The next morning, Rebecca found a hotel receipt in his coat.

The room had been booked for Marcus Whitmore and Dana Reeves.

👉 Dana had not returned only to reunite with Ethan—she had returned to replace Rebecca in Marcus’s bed, home, and company.
