Chapter 12 - EVERY WORD HE THOUGHT WAS PRIVATE
The recording filled the ballroom.
“Once I call Rebecca the nanny in front of everyone, she’ll be too humiliated to fight the settlement.”
Marcus’s recorded laughter followed.
Dana’s voice came next.
“She’ll disappear once Ethan has a real mother.”
Guests turned toward them.
A company director removed his glasses and stared at Marcus.
Rebecca’s former school principal began crying.
Several employees looked toward one another as Marcus described taking Rebecca’s shares.
The recording continued.
“I’ll tell the board she never contributed anything,” Marcus said. “No one remembers where the original money came from.”
Ethan stopped the audio.
“I remember.”
Marcus tried to rise.
“This recording was manipulated.”
Ethan opened the company-share folder on the ballroom screen.
The original investment appeared.
Rebecca Lane—52 percent ownership.
Documents showed her inheritance funded the company.
Her property sale saved it during the recession.
Her personal guarantees protected employee salaries.
Marcus had built the public image.
Rebecca had supplied the foundation.
Dana tried to leave.
Two directors blocked the side aisle—not physically, but by standing where she would have to face them.
“Did company money purchase your condo?” one asked.
Dana turned toward Marcus.
“You said those payments were legal.”
Marcus snapped, “Be quiet.”
Rebecca rose slowly.
Ethan held her arm.
He displayed the divorce draft next.
The guests saw Marcus describe his wife as an unpaid caregiver with no meaningful financial contribution.
Then Ethan displayed the custody records.
Rebecca’s emergency guardianship.
Dana’s signed refusal.
Marcus’s withdrawal of adoption consent.
Dana began shaking her head.
“I was pressured.”
Samuel entered through the ballroom doors.
“Then you can explain that under oath.”
Behind him stood the company’s outside counsel and a financial investigator.
Marcus stared at the envelope in Samuel’s hands.
“Why is he here?”
