Chapter 14 - THE VOTE MARCUS NEVER EXPECTED
Ethan’s ten-percent trust transferred at noon on graduation day.
Combined with Rebecca’s 52 percent, they controlled 62 percent of Whitmore Hospitality.
Marcus still believed Ethan would give him the voting proxy.
Instead, Ethan signed a resolution suspending Marcus as chief executive pending the fraud investigation.
The outside directors added their votes.
Marcus read the document in disbelief.
“You cannot remove me at a party.”
Rebecca’s voice became steady.
“This is not a board meeting. The emergency vote occurred before we entered.”
Marcus looked toward the directors.
They had already signed.
His corporate email and financial access were frozen.
Building security had been instructed to collect his company devices.
The investigator requested that Marcus remain available for questioning regarding the forged approvals and payments to Dana.
Dana turned on him immediately.
“You told me Rebecca had already agreed to the transfers.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You knew exactly where the money came from.”
“I never forged anything.”
“You signed the invoices.”
Their partnership collapsed in front of the guests they had intended to impress.
Rebecca watched without satisfaction.
This was not revenge.
This was the end of a lie she had carried because she believed protecting the family meant protecting Marcus’s reputation.
Marcus looked at her.
“You would have nothing without me.”
Rebecca held the shareholder ledger.
“I had a career, an inheritance, and a home before you.”
“You needed me to become a mother.”
The cruelty returned.
Rebecca flinched.
Ethan stepped closer.
“No. I needed her.”
A financial investigator asked Marcus to surrender his phone.
He refused.
The investigator informed him that a court order covered the device because company funds had been used in suspected fraud.
Marcus looked toward the ballroom doors.
Uniformed officers were waiting outside.
He finally handed over the phone.
Dana attempted to delete messages from hers.
An officer stopped her.
The celebration ended early.
Guests left quietly.
Marcus and Dana were escorted into separate vehicles for questioning.
Rebecca remained in the ballroom beside the broken cake.
Twenty years of marriage had ended in less than twenty minutes.
