Chapter 11 - THE GRADUATION PARTY

The ballroom looked beautiful.

Marcus had spared no expense with money that was not entirely his.

Pastel roses surrounded the stage.

A three-tier cake stood beneath the congratulations banner.

Professors, relatives, employees, and company directors filled the room.

Rebecca entered beside Ethan.

For one hour, the party almost felt genuine.

Ethan gave a short speech thanking his professors.

Then he thanked Rebecca.

“She taught me that success means nothing if you abandon people when they need you.”

Marcus’s smile tightened.

Dana entered before dessert.

She wore red and allowed the guests to assume her arrival was a surprise.

Marcus raised a glass.

“Tonight is about new beginnings.”

Rebecca’s stomach turned.

Marcus announced that Dana was Ethan’s biological mother.

Some guests applauded uncertainly.

Dana stepped toward Ethan.

He did not embrace her.

Marcus then turned toward Rebecca.

“For too long, we have allowed confusion about family roles.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

Marcus continued.

“Rebecca helped when Ethan was young. We appreciate that. But she was never his real mother.”

The ballroom went silent.

Rebecca stood.

Marcus lifted the divorce envelope.

“You should accept the truth gracefully.”

Dana smiled.

“You were the help, Rebecca. Nothing more.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

Marcus delivered the sentence he had rehearsed.

“You were just the nanny.”

He reached toward Ethan, expecting his son to move beside him.

Ethan stepped in front of Rebecca instead.

The movement startled Marcus.

His hand struck the cake stand.

The table shifted.

Marcus lost his footing on spilled frosting and fell backward, pulling half the cake down over his suit.

Dana screamed.

Children moved away.

Rebecca dropped to her knees, overwhelmed by the cruelty and chaos.

Ethan knelt beside her.

“Don’t call her that.”

Marcus sat stunned beneath crushed cake roses.

Then Ethan picked up the phone and pressed play.

👉 Marcus’s voice was about to expose the entire plan, but the guests had not yet seen the proof of who truly built the Whitmore family.
