Chapter 6 - The First Recording

Margaret pressed a button on the smaller recorder.
She did not play the original audio aloud.
Instead, she connected it to a speaker through an encrypted playback unit.
Emily’s voice filled the dark ballroom.
“If Brad says I signed the transfer, he’s lying.”
Several board members looked at one another.
Emily continued.
“I found duplicate access keys inside the Halcyon network. Someone has been copying financial records and client identities.”
Brad moved toward the device.
The bodyguard blocked him again.
Emily’s breathing sounded fast.
“I confronted him. He said the company needed a more stable face.”
A second voice appeared.
Brad.
“You’re exhausted, Em. Sign the temporary authority and rest.”
“I didn’t authorize any sale.”
“You don’t understand what’s already in motion.”
Then Mrs. Gable spoke.
“You built something valuable, darling. That doesn’t mean you’re capable of keeping it.”
The recording stopped.
Margaret looked toward Mrs. Gable.
The older woman stood perfectly still.
One attorney stepped away from her.
Brad recovered first.
“Audio can be edited.”
Margaret nodded.
“That is why the original has already been delivered.”
A Halcyon director asked the question no one wanted to ask.
“Was there ever a valid acquisition?”
Brad did not answer.
Mrs. Gable did.
“Yes.”

Margaret picked up the second recorder.
“Then you won’t mind hearing the rest.”
