Chapter 14 - Emily Leaves a Trail

Emily understood Cole would move her again.
She also knew the recorder signal might fail underground.
So she began leaving physical markers.
A torn strip from her blouse.
A button pressed into mud.
Drops of blue ink from a broken pen inside her handbag.
At the hydroelectric facility, officers found the first strip near a service entrance.
Inside, the tunnels divided.
One route led toward the river intake.
Another led to abandoned control rooms.
A third descended below the waterline.
Cole had disabled the lights.
Emily used the wall to guide herself.
Her shoulder was badly injured.
She was weak from sedation.
But she remained conscious.
Cole told her Margaret had given up.
Emily did not believe him.
“My mother doesn’t give up.”
Cole laughed.
“Your mother doesn’t know where you are.”
Emily heard helicopters outside.
She smiled despite the pain.
May you like
“She does now.”
Cole dragged her deeper into the tunnel.
