Emily underwent surgery for a fractured shoulder, internal bruising, and complications from the sedative.
Doctors expected her to recover.
Margaret remained beside her bed.
Brad was arrested before he could leave the mansion.
Mrs. Gable and Vane were taken separately.
The physician attempted to destroy medical records.
The files had already been copied.
Emily woke the following morning.
Her first question concerned Halcyon.
Margaret squeezed her hand.
“The company still exists.”
“Brad?”
“In custody.”
“His mother?”
“Also.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“I loved him.”
Margaret did not tell her she had been foolish.
Love did not make a victim responsible for another person’s betrayal.
