Chapter 15 - The Recorder Speaks Again
The second recorder transmitted a short burst.
Margaret heard Emily’s breathing.
Water echoed nearby.
Cole’s voice followed.
“You destroyed my family.”
Emily answered quietly.
“Your brother stole from soldiers.”
“He did what everyone did.”
“He got caught.”
Cole struck the wall beside her.
“You sent him to prison.”
“I sent evidence.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Emily sounded injured, but mentally clear.
Then the recording captured a mechanical alarm.
Colonel Grant, who had joined the operation through a federal security liaison, recognized it.
A pressure gate was opening.
Cole intended to flood one of the tunnels.
The police commander ordered teams to withdraw from the lower passage.
Margaret interrupted.
“If they withdraw, he moves her.”
The commander explained the risk.
Margaret studied the facility plans.
One maintenance shaft entered from higher ground.
It was narrow.
Too narrow for a full tactical team.
