Chapter 17 - Emily’s Signal
Emily began speaking loudly.
“You think Brad will protect you?”
Cole turned toward her.
“He already told them where this place is.”
“You’re lying.”
“He always saves himself.”
That part was true.
Cole stepped closer.
Emily shifted her foot toward a loose metal wrench on the floor.
Margaret waited.
Emily looked toward the overhead vent.
Once.
Twice.
A childhood signal.
Ready.
Margaret dropped from the opening as the tactical officer moved toward Cole’s weapon arm.
Emily kicked the wrench across the floor.
Cole turned at the sound.
The officer struck his wrist.
Margaret pulled Emily backward.
Cole fought violently, but the officer drove him against the control panel.
The knife fell.
Emily collapsed into Margaret’s arms.
“Mom.”
“I’ve got you.”
Cole reached toward the gate lever.
Emily saw it first.
She grabbed the broken wrench and jammed it beneath the mechanism.
The gate stopped moving.
