Chapter 4 - The Woman Brad Underestimated

Brad knew Margaret as a school librarian.

That was intentional.

He never asked what she had done before Emily was born.

Margaret had spent nineteen years as a military intelligence officer specializing in interrogation resistance and protective operations.

She left after her husband died and raised Emily alone.

She did not discuss the past.

Brad mistook silence for weakness.

He mocked her used car.

Ignored her advice.

Once, during dinner, he called her “a sweet little woman who worries too much.”

Margaret smiled and passed the potatoes.

Emily knew the truth.

As a child, she had watched her mother break a man’s grip with one wrist movement after he tried to steal Margaret’s purse.

That was why Emily called her first.

Not the police.

Not Brad.

Margaret.

When Brad rushed her in the foyer, he expected fear.

He received training.

After she threw him across the table, Margaret saw recognition in Mrs. Gable’s eyes.

Not recognition of Margaret’s skill.

Recognition of the recorder.

Mrs. Gable had seen it before.

That mattered.

Margaret scanned the guests beneath the red emergency lights.

Three attorneys.

Two corporate bankers.

Several Halcyon board members.

Four private security officers.

And one state senator who immediately put his phone face down.

The vibration alert Margaret had sent reached all of them.

Each device displayed the same message:

A secure evidence package concerning Halcyon Systems had been delivered to federal investigators, regulators, and selected journalists.

The Send button had not transmitted the evidence.

It had confirmed receipt.
