Chapter 16 - The Mother Goes In

Authorities tried to stop Margaret.

She ignored them until Colonel Grant spoke directly.

“You are not twenty-five anymore.”

“No.”

“You have no body armor.”

“Give me one.”

“This is not a rescue fantasy.”

“She will respond to my voice.”

Grant knew she was right.

Cole expected police.

He did not expect Margaret.

A tactical officer accompanied her through the maintenance shaft.

They crawled more than one hundred feet through dust and rusted metal.

The tunnel opened above an old control room.

Below them, Cole held Emily near a gate wheel.

Water surged behind a reinforced barrier.

Emily’s hands were bound.

Her face was bruised.

Her injured arm was secured against her body with torn fabric.

Cole held a knife.

Margaret saw her daughter.

Emily looked up.

For one second, relief crossed her face.

Then she hid it.

Margaret understood.

Cole had not seen them.
