Chapter 2 - The Party Emily Never Attended
The party had been advertised as a celebration of Brad’s newest acquisition.
He had announced that Gable Capital had secured ownership of Halcyon Systems, a cybersecurity company valued at more than two hundred million dollars.
What no one in the ballroom knew was that Halcyon did not belong to Brad.
It belonged to Emily Hale.
Margaret’s daughter had built the company in a rented apartment after leaving the Navy’s digital defense program.
For six years, she worked eighteen-hour days.
Brad joined during the third year.
He called himself an investor.
He contributed introductions, expensive suits, and the ability to speak confidently in rooms where Emily’s intelligence made powerful men uncomfortable.
Within two years, they were engaged.
Within three, Brad began treating Halcyon as his.
Emily discovered that he had created duplicate corporate documents carrying her electronic signature.
She confronted him privately.
Brad denied everything.
Then he accused her of instability.
He told investors she was exhausted.
He told employees she had developed a prescription-drug problem.
He told his mother that Emily might destroy the company if they did not take control.
Mrs. Gable helped him prepare.
They scheduled the mansion party before Emily had signed a single transfer document.
They expected her to arrive quietly and surrender.
She never entered the ballroom.
Three hours before the celebration, Margaret received a call from Emily.
Her daughter’s voice was shaking.
