Chapter 3 - The Sister Everyone Preferred
Jessica had always been the family favorite.
She was charming where Rachel was reserved.
Beautiful in photographs where Rachel looked uncomfortable.
Jessica remembered birthdays, wrote thank-you cards, and knew how to make their parents feel admired.
Rachel disappeared for months at a time.
She missed Christmas dinners.
Ignored family group chats.
Refused to explain her work.
Their parents believed she was employed by a private security contractor.
That was partially true.
Rachel had been recruited into Black Echo, a classified federal task force created to investigate threats involving stolen defense systems.
Its agents worked outside traditional agency structures because Meridian had people inside those structures.
Rachel’s silence protected her family.
But silence created another story.
To Richard, she was unreliable.
To Linda, emotionally distant.
To Jessica, jealous.
When Rachel tried to warn them about Evan after the engagement, Jessica laughed.
“You investigate office buildings for insurance companies.”
“That isn’t what I do.”
“Then what do you do?”
Rachel could not answer.
Jessica stepped closer.
“You disappear for years, then return and decide my fiancé is dangerous because he’s more successful than you.”
“I’m trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
Rachel looked across the restaurant at Evan.
He was watching them.
“From something you won’t believe until it hurts you.”
Jessica repeated those words to their parents.
By the wedding day, the family believed Rachel planned to ruin the marriage out of resentment.
That made Evan’s work easier.
He did not need to silence Rachel.
He only needed everyone to distrust her.
At 9:15 p.m., Jessica disappeared from the ballroom.
At 9:17, Rachel followed Evan through a restricted service corridor.
At 9:19, she heard Jessica crying behind a locked door.
Then she heard Evan say:
“You married me. That means your family belongs to us now.”

Someone struck her from behind.
