Chapter 2 - The Wedding That Ended in the ER
Six hours earlier, the Cole family had gathered at an expensive Connecticut estate for Jessica’s wedding.
Everything had been designed to impress.
White roses covered the staircase.
A string quartet played beneath crystal chandeliers.
Three hundred guests filled the ballroom.
Rachel arrived alone.
She wore a simple dark dress over a concealed support brace around her ribs. No one knew she had returned from overseas two days earlier.
Jessica saw her and immediately frowned.
“You wore black to my wedding?”
“It’s navy.”
“It looks like a funeral dress.”
Rachel almost answered that funerals had become familiar to her.
Instead, she handed Jessica a small velvet box containing their grandmother’s pearl earrings.
Jessica opened it, then handed it to their mother.
“I’m wearing diamonds.”
Linda gave Rachel an apologetic smile.
Richard did not greet her at all.
He stood near the bar with Congressman Nathan Voss, Jessica’s future father-in-law.
The Voss family owned defense companies, hospitals, and private security firms across the East Coast.
Jessica’s groom, Evan Voss, was handsome, polished, and constantly photographed.
Rachel had met him only twice.
Both times, something about him felt rehearsed.
At the reception, Rachel noticed men wearing security earpieces who were not listed among the estate staff.
She also recognized the insignia on one man’s watch.
A black circle divided by a silver line.
She had seen it three years earlier inside a covert weapons transfer site in Eastern Europe.
The symbol belonged to Meridian.
A private network that sold classified military technology through shell corporations.
Rachel quietly photographed the man.
Within seconds, her phone lost signal.
Across the ballroom, Evan looked directly at her.
Then smiled.
Rachel understood.
