Chapter 29 - The Hospital Hallway Again

Seven years after the wedding, Rachel returned to the same hospital.
Not as a patient.
Jessica was giving birth.
The emergency hallway had been renovated, but Rachel recognized the turn near the old admissions desk.
Linda sat beside her.
Both women waited quietly.
Richard participated through a supervised video call from a reentry facility. He had served his sentence and continued cooperating with investigators.
Jessica’s labor became complicated.
A nurse rushed through the doors.
For one terrible second, Rachel heard the memory of the continuous monitor tone.
Her hand moved instinctively toward the place where the beacon once rested.
There was no vest.
No weapon.
No encrypted drive.
Only fear.
Linda touched her arm.
“We wait.”
Rachel forced herself to breathe.
Two hours later, the doctor emerged smiling.
Jessica was safe.
Her daughter was healthy.
Rachel entered the room.
Jessica held the baby against her chest.
“She needs a middle name.”
Rachel looked suspicious.
“You already chose one.”
Jessica smiled.
“Echo.”
Rachel stared at her.
“Absolutely not.”
Linda laughed.
Jessica did too.
The baby’s middle name became Grace.
No code.
No operation.
No hidden meaning.
Just Grace.
Rachel held her niece near the same hallway where her family once learned who she really was.
This time, nobody screamed.
No agents entered.

No one had to activate anything.
Safety felt quieter than victory.
