Chapter 28 - Evan’s Letter
Five years into his sentence, Evan wrote Jessica a letter.
He apologized.
Not for everything.
At first, he blamed his father, Vale, and the environment in which he was raised.
Jessica nearly stopped reading.
Then the tone changed.
He admitted choosing ambition over her safety.
He admitted enjoying the power his family gave him.
He admitted that even after learning she might be killed, he acted only when he realized Meridian would sacrifice him too.
“I did not save you,” he wrote. “I tried to save myself beside you.”
Jessica sent one response.
“You finally told the truth. That does not create a relationship between us.”
She never wrote again.
Rachel asked whether answering helped.
Jessica thought about it.
“It closed a door I kept checking.”
Evan later testified in additional cases involving hidden Voss accounts.
His cooperation helped victims recover money.
Jessica acknowledged the result without praising him.
Good actions after exposure did not rewrite earlier choices.
Rachel respected her sister’s boundary.
Years earlier, she might have told Jessica exactly what to do.
Now she asked only:
“Do you feel safe?”
“Yes.”
“Then I trust your decision.”
For Jessica, those words carried more meaning than Rachel knew.
