Chapter 24 - The Trial of Meridian
The Meridian trial lasted eleven months.
Prosecutors introduced thousands of records.
Basement footage.
Hospital files.
Factory transmissions.
Financial ledgers.
The Glass Harbor audio.
Evan’s defense argued that he was raised inside the network and conditioned to obey.
Jessica testified:
“He knew fear. He also knew I was unable to stand, and he still helped move me.”
Thomas Vale claimed Richard created the original technology.
Richard took the stand and admitted it.
Then he explained Vale’s role without minimizing his own.
“I made one cowardly choice and spent twenty-six years making more choices to protect it.”
Congressman Voss denied ordering violence.
The parking-lot driver testified otherwise.
Caroline remained calm throughout most of the trial.
Only Linda’s testimony affected her.
Linda described years of friendship.
Hospital visits.
Shared holidays.
The trust she gave Caroline with both daughters.
Then she said:
“You did not lose my life. You built your own and used mine as an excuse.”
Caroline finally looked away.
Rachel testified last.
The defense tried to frame her as a violent operative who escalated the wedding.
The complete video showed restraint.
She fought only when attacked.
She protected Jessica.
She surrendered to police.
She activated federal support only when the drive and her life were in immediate danger.
The jury convicted Vale, Voss, Caroline, and multiple Meridian operatives.
Evan was convicted on conspiracy, unlawful restraint, obstruction, and assault-related charges.
Richard was convicted separately.
The sentences varied.
None erased the past.
But Meridian lost its secrecy.
