Chapter 11 - The Man Who Watched Them Grow Up
Thomas Vale had attended Rachel’s high-school graduation.
He bought Jessica her first bicycle.
He taught Richard how to build his business.
Old family photographs showed him beside them at birthdays and summer cookouts.
Rachel remembered his habit of touching the silver ring on his right hand whenever he lied.
The same silver ring appeared in a blurred reflection from the estate basement footage.
A man had watched the interrogation from behind one-way glass.
Marcus enhanced the image.
The ring was visible.
Thomas Vale was alive.
Linda began crying.
“I knew.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She admitted receiving a letter two months after Vale’s supposed death.
He warned her never to ask questions about Richard’s contracts.
He included photographs of Rachel overseas.
At the time, Rachel had not told her family she had joined federal service.
Vale knew.
He threatened to expose Rachel and destroy Richard’s business if Linda spoke.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Rachel asked.
“You were never home.”
“You could have called.”
“I was afraid.”
Fear had defined the family long before the wedding.
Richard feared losing his company.
Linda feared losing both daughters.
Jessica feared losing the life she built with Evan.
Rachel feared that telling them the truth would place them in danger.
Every silence gave Meridian more control.
Marcus traced the letter’s paper and ink.
It came from a private club in Rhode Island.
The club was owned by a foundation connected to Congressman Voss.
Federal agents raided it.
They found photographs documenting the Cole family for twenty years.
School schedules.
Medical records.
Bank statements.
Wedding plans.
Rachel’s classified movements.
One photograph showed Thomas Vale beside Harbor One.
But Harbor One’s face had been cut away.
On the back, someone had written:
