Chapter 21 - The Empty Hospital

The neurological hospital had closed ten years earlier.
Its records claimed structural damage.
In reality, Meridian used its underground wards to hide witnesses.
Rachel entered through the main lobby in a wheelchair, exactly as Caroline demanded.
No visible weapon.
No active radio.
But Black Echo agents surrounded the property beyond the signal-jamming perimeter.
Rachel carried a false drive.
Caroline’s voice came through ceiling speakers.
“Leave it on the desk.”
Rachel obeyed.
A door opened.
She rolled into a dark treatment wing.
Jessica lay behind a glass wall, breathing but unconscious.
Caroline stood beside her.
“You look like Linda,” Caroline said.
Rachel kept her eyes on Jessica.
“What did you give her?”
“Something temporary.”
“You told my mother you loved us.”
“I did.”
“No. You loved being necessary.”
Caroline’s face tightened.
She claimed Linda stole the life she deserved.
Richard’s success.
The family.
The daughters.
Vale offered Caroline power when Richard offered only friendship.
Over time, revenge became structure.
Every contract Richard accepted strengthened Meridian.
Every secret Linda kept deepened Caroline’s control.
Rachel asked why Jessica had to suffer.
“She chose Evan.”
“You arranged Evan.”
Caroline smiled.
“I arranged opportunity. People reveal themselves through what they choose.”
Rachel recognized the same belief that guided Meridian.
Create pressure.
Then call the outcome inevitable.
Caroline demanded Rachel’s real Black Echo credentials.
Rachel said they were stored in the beacon beneath her vest.
Caroline approached.
The wheelchair’s right wheel blinked once.
Not a light.
A reflected signal.

Marcus’s team had entered the tunnel below.
Rachel only needed Caroline closer.
