Black Echo had recruited Rachel after she exposed stolen military components during her first federal assignment.
She believed Marcus discovered her work.

Vale manipulated contracts around Richard’s company so Rachel would encounter suspicious shipments.
He expected her ambition and sense of justice to carry her into classified service.
Then Meridian planned to control her through her family.

They cultivated Jessica instead.
Evan met her at a charity dinner arranged by Vale’s foundation.
Their relationship appeared romantic.

Evan proposed after learning Jessica had access to Rachel’s old bedroom and family storage boxes.
He searched for codes, devices, and anything connected to Black Echo.
Jessica remembered him repeatedly asking about childhood keepsakes.
He once opened a sealed box containing Rachel’s academy records.
She thought he was planning a surprise anniversary gift.
Now she understood.
Her marriage had been designed as an infiltration.
Jessica removed her wedding ring.
She placed it on the hospital table.
“I don’t know what was real.”
Rachel answered:
“Your feelings were real. His decisions were not.”
Jessica broke down quietly.
No screaming.

Marcus entered with news.
Evan had escaped federal transport.
The vehicle carrying him was struck by another SUV.
Two officers were injured.
Evan vanished.
Security footage showed him entering a helicopter registered to Vale Aviation.
