Chapter 9 - The Signature He Expected

Adrian began with the divorce petition.

He described it as a peaceful separation.

The custody agreement followed.

Then the property waiver.

Evelyn read as much as her blurred vision allowed.

“Primary custody?”

“You need time to recover.”

“For how long?”

“We’ll evaluate later.”

“Who is ‘we’?”

Adrian looked at Celeste.

Evelyn understood.

“You plan to raise my babies with her?”

“You are not in a condition to raise anyone.”

“I gave birth six hours ago.”

“Exactly.”

Celeste moved closer to the bassinets.

Evelyn’s fear became anger.

“Step away from my children.”

Adrian pressed the pen into her hand.

“No one would want you now.”

The words entered the room like poison.

Evelyn stared at him.

Adrian continued.

“You don’t work. Your parents cut you off. You have three infants and a body that will take months to recover.”

Celeste smiled.

“This agreement is generous.”

Evelyn looked down at the property waiver.

Beneath it, part of the transfer deed was visible.

The house was being placed in Celeste’s name.

“You promised her our home.”

“It is my home.”

“No.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“What did you say?”

“It belongs to a trust.”

His expression changed.

Celeste stepped forward.

“How do you know?”

Evelyn realized they had not known the full ownership structure.

They were guessing.

She turned toward her pillow and saw that a nurse had returned her phone.

Evelyn touched the recording icon.

Adrian was too focused on the papers to notice.

“You forged my name on the trust application,” she said.

“I corrected an administrative issue.”

“You transferred a house you don’t own.”

“I control everything connected to this family.”

Evelyn looked toward the bassinets.

“You think custody gives you the babies’ trust.”

Celeste’s face tightened.

Adrian gripped the bedrail.

“Sign.”

“No.”

He forced the pen between her fingers.

The pain in Evelyn’s incision intensified as she pulled away.

“You’re hurting me.”

“Then stop resisting.”

Celeste watched the doorway.

“Someone’s coming.”

Adrian released the pen.

Footsteps passed without stopping.

He exhaled.

Evelyn pressed CALL beneath the blanket.

Her father answered.

“Evelyn?”

Her voice broke.

“Dad… I chose wrong.”

Adrian laughed because he still believed Robert Bennett was only an angry father too late to matter.

He had no idea Robert was sitting beside the attorney who controlled every account Adrian had tried to use.

👉 Evelyn’s call did not begin the legal response—it confirmed the final act of coercion Robert’s team had been waiting to record.
