Chapter 16 - Evelyn’s Statement
Evelyn did not hold a press conference.
She recorded a short statement from a quiet hospital family room.
No makeup team.
No dramatic music.
Three photographs rested on the table.
The divorce petition.
The custody agreement.
The transfer deed naming Celeste.
“My husband has described this as a business dispute,” Evelyn began.
“It is not.”
She explained that Adrian presented the documents hours after she delivered three premature babies by emergency surgery.
She did not discuss every private detail.
She did not need to.
“He believed exhaustion made my consent easier to obtain. He believed motherhood made me financially useless. He believed separation from my parents meant I had no protection.”
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“No signature obtained through threats is consent. No parent should lose access to a child because the other parent chose the moment of greatest physical weakness to create paperwork.”
The statement spread quickly.
Hospital workers began sharing information about postpartum legal coercion.
Family-law advocates discussed the dangers of pressuring patients to sign property or custody documents while medicated.
Former Mercer Development employees contacted investigators.
One accountant revealed Adrian had ordered her to classify Celeste’s personal spending as project expenses.
A driver admitted he had transported Adrian and Celeste to Evelyn’s house while Evelyn attended prenatal appointments.
A former assistant produced calendar entries showing that Adrian planned the divorce before the pregnancy reached its third trimester.
Adrian’s public defense collapsed.
His attorneys advised him to negotiate.
He offered to surrender the house and accept supervised visitation if Evelyn asked prosecutors to drop the fraud charges.
Evelyn rejected the proposal.
“The house was never his to surrender.”
He sent a private message through counsel.
You’re destroying the father of your children.
Evelyn responded once.
You tried to turn their birth into leverage. Accountability is not something I am doing to you.
Celeste accepted a cooperation agreement.
She surrendered emails and recordings in exchange for prosecutors considering her assistance at sentencing.
One recording was especially damaging.
Adrian said:
Once Evelyn signs, the babies become the bridge to the Bennett money.
Celeste replied:
And if she refuses?
Adrian answered:
She’ll sign. She’ll be alone, in pain and terrified of losing them.
The recording proved planning beyond doubt.
The criminal charges expanded to include conspiracy, wire fraud, identity theft and attempted coercion.
Adrian still refused to plead guilty.
